But this Blog: Free Beer! is going to be more about my journey as a Volunteer Coordinator.
It began over 15 years ago when I was hired for a part time position at MCT and I began to apply my experience as a Stage Manager to the task of coordinating, recruiting, and rewarding volunteers.
Stage Managers are not known for being warm & fuzzy. They are expected to be organized, efficient, and a bit of a disciplinarian. My first "failure" was at the auditions for "Bye Bye Birdie" - I had signs up and new cards, sharpened pencils, updated schedules, coffee perking, and cookies on a plate. Things went fairly smoothly until the Director took me aside and told me that I was expected to bring in "home-made" cookies . I sent a withering look in his direction and stated that I wasn't the "baking-type". Score? Cool and efficient = 1; Warm & fuzzy = 0.
I now understand that my volunteers looked forward to that personal touch. I still don't bake cookies. Is that a testament to my efficiency or my stubborness? But I am always working on that smile of welcome or extra bit of attention shared with the volunteers that cross my path. I wonder if one of them would volunteer to bake cookies?
